White Merles

The white-merle collie is the result of breeding two merle parents and the acquisition of the M gene from each parent resulting in the MM genotype. The white-merle collie is also referred to as a "double dilute" or "double merle". This animal may or may not have a few blue, tan or black spots on its body. Vision and/or hearing may be impaired. It is not always possible to determine at birth which white-merles do and do not have defective vision and/or hearing. A white-merle can only produce merles: white-merles, blue-merles, or sable-merles. (paragraph taken from the book THE COLLIE - A VETERINARY REFERENCE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL BREEDER, by Sharon Vanderlip, D.V.M., with her permission.)

Our 2003 litter of Rainshade Gamut Warning X Can CH Rainbow Delight's Gold Hill resulted in 2 white-merle puppies, Sky and Pepper. Both puppies were normal in every way and beautiful as well. We fell in total love with these two angels from heaven and although they no longer live here at Rainbow Delight Collies, I want to include them as they will forever be part of our hearts

Sky no longer lives at Rainbow Delight Collies, but has gone to live with his forever family in Colorado.  Sky has grown into a very lovely mellow boy with lots of love to give.  He has already sired his first litter of wonderful puppies (see Sienna's page) that are bold, intelligent and have a wonderful performance ability.  Sky was a favorite and will always be nestled into our hearts.

Sky is not only of excellent health, correct structure, sound hearing but also Normal Eyed Non-Carrier for CEA.

Pepper also no longer lives at Rainbow Delight Collies but has gone to live with Jana Lashmit in Maryland.  She joins Bonnie as her seeing companion, as Bonnie is a blind collie.  Pepper will enjoy drafting, agility, obedience and many other special activities including training to become a Certified Therapy Dog.
Pepper is very outgoing and is proving to be another "clone" of her mother's personality.  A little more independent and FULL of excitement and fun.  Jana tells me that she is just a little "social butterfly".  Life is going to be "all about ME!"  We will truly miss our white Micki clone and all of her wonderful kisses.

Pepper, like her littermate Sky, has defied the common beliefs regarding white merle's.  She is extremely healthy, very alert with normal hearing and vision.  Pepper is also free of CEA and PRA, a possible non-carrier

NEWS FLASH!!!!!!  Pepper has been proven a Non-Carrier of CEA by the Optigen DNA test.

Pepper has the following health clearances:
OFA: CO-2472E28F-PI (excellent)
CERF: CO-1804 (normal)
Thyroid: CO-TH53/21F-PI (normal)
MDR-1: Normal/mutant

There is now new DNA testing being done to try and solve some of the mysteries of the White Merle as well as Blue Merle.  Please check back for further updates on this research.
